Mike, Susan, and Bill gathered outside of their vehicles just before dawn. They had risen silently, repacked their vehicles, and stood next to them with steaming mugs of coffee in their hands.

“How much longer do you want to wait?” Bill asked the group while staring at the front porch of Craig and Delores’ home.

“I don’t want to slip away like thieves in the night without at least saying our goodbyes and thanking them one more time,” Mike replied.

“I don’t either, but we need to get on the move,” Bill maintained. “We can cover a lot of ground and circumvent the town ahead with less trouble before sunlight.”

“Agreed,” Mike said, nodding his head.

“I will go up and knock and see if they are up,” Susan said, setting her mug on the hood of the beast and walking towards the house.

Mike and Bill fell in behind her but kept their coffee mugs in hand. Coffee, especially hot, was becoming a rarity and they weren’t giving theirs up to the cool morning air.

As the three approached the porch, they heard the front porch door swing open and saw Craig stepping out on the porch to greet them. He was holding a mug of coffee in one hand and a large thermos in the other.

Bill rushed up onto the porch with his mug extended and said, “It would be a shame to waste hot coffee and I wouldn’t want to insult you.” The last part he said with a broad smile on his face.

Craig chuckled, setting his mug down on an arm of one of the porch chairs, opening the thermos to top off Bill’s mug. The steaming mixture poured from the thermos, filling the immediate surrounding air with the aroma of quality coffee. Susan looked at both Bill and Mike incredulously as they topped off their mugs with smiles.

“I see how this morning is going to go,” Susan said in mock frustration.

Craig reached behind him through the door, his hand returning with a new empty mug for Susan. “Don’t worry, young lady, chivalry is not entirely dead,” Craig said with a warm smile.

“You are a true gentleman, Craig,” Susan said as she reached for the cup. “Not like these two heathens I travel with.”

Bill and Mike looked at her and shrugged with devilish grins. “Oh, the crosses we bear,” Bill said with a mock sigh. Susan glared at Bill, pointing a finger at him. “You are first on my list today, sir.”

The four chuckled softly and enjoyed sips of the coffee and the morning air. Craig had stepped fully onto the porch and was standing at the edge, surveying the area.

“I would invite you in for breakfast, but I have a feeling you want to leave soon,” Craig said, breaking the uneasy silence.

Susan placed a gentle hand on his arm, looking up at him, saying, “I take it you and Delores have decided to stay?”

Craig looked at the three sullenly and replied, “I am afraid so, Mrs.
